Product Description

The shield is divided into vertical halves. The red side displays a gold lion, symbolic of strength and national dignity. On the yellow, a leafy green baobob tree (native to the region) rises from its sturdy brown trunk; under such massive trees African chiefs traditionally hold palavers and solemnize state acts. Below the tree is a wavy green line representing the river Senegal. Black and white palm branches surround the shield, opening at the top to frame a green star. Senegal's flag, originally adopted in 1959, was only slightly modified when the Federation of Mali-Senegal broke up in 1960. The vertical green, yellow, and red bands are patterned after the banner of Ethiopia in Pan-African colors. In place of the stylized black figure of an African dancer which appeared on the Federation banner, the Senegalese flag bears a green star centered in the middle stripe as a symbol of African freedom.?ΓΏ Symbols Of The Nations, 236
