Product Description

?ÿ Introduced in 1937 (when the nation was known as the Union of South Africa), the Republicƒ??s flag is a horizontal tricolor of orange, white, and blue, based on the old ƒ??Prinsevlagƒ? under which the Dutch gained their independence in Europe. Centered in the white stripe are three more small flags. Nearest the hoist is a horizontal red, white, and blue ƒ??Union Jackƒ? now representing the former British colonies of Good Hope and Natal. Nearest the fly is the ƒ??Vierkleurƒ? of the Transvaal, a red, white, and blue tricolor with a narrow vertical green stripe at its hoist; it served as the banner of the old South African Republic from 1857 to the end of the Boer War. Between the two, displayed as a perpendicular, is the orange and white seven-striped flag presented to the Orange Free State in 1856 by the Dutch king; the Netherlands tricolor is in its canton. ?ÿ Symbols of the Nations, 246 ?ÿ
