Product Description

?ÿ Set against the regally arrogant black and gold haloed eagle of San Juan is an ornately crowned shield with quarterings representing the kingdoms joined to create the Spanish nation. Castile and Leon are represented respectively by golden castles on red and red royal lions on white. The lower tip of the shield expresses a visual pun; against a white background between green leaves is a red pomegranate whose Spanish name is the same as that of former Moorish kingdom of which it is the symbol. Below the eagleƒ??s wings appear red symbols of ancient Spainƒ??a yoke symbolizing agriculture and a spread of arrows representing national defense. While a simple horizontal flag with a broad yellow band dividing two narrower red stripes is flown on Spanish merchant vessels, that most often seen is the 1938 state flag, ensign, and military flag with displays the state coat of arms centered within the yellow portion. The colors reflect the arms of the ancient kingdoms making up the Spanish realm. ?ÿ Symbols of the Nations, 248 ?ÿ
