Product Description

?ÿ The colorful native shield is divided horizontally into four parts. At the top a flashing red torch on a yellow field represents liberty and enlightenment. Next comes a replica of the new green, gold, and black, and blue flag, followed by a device (on a red background) of crossed gold war axes and a gold spear which extends up into the flag sector and down into the wavy blue and white lines of the fourth segment (which symbolizes both the sea separating Zanzibar and Pemba from the mainland and the great fresh water lakes of Victoria, Tanganyika, and Nyasa). The national flag adopted in 1964 combines features of the flags in use by Tanganyika and Zanzibar before their union. The diagonal stripe is black, edged by two narrow yellow bands. The black represents the African peoples, while the yellow stands for the nationƒ??s wealth. The upper green triangle represents the land of the new union and undoubtedly has religious connotations for the Moslems of Zanzibar. All three of these colors appeared in the former Tanganyika flag. The blue triangle represents the sea and the island of Zanzibar. ?ÿ Symbols of the Nations, 260 ?ÿ
