Stripes:?ÿSeven red, six white.Stars:?ÿOn the blue field, 33 stars, representing the states in the pre-Civil War United States, arranged with two vertical outer rows of five stars each bordering a diamond-shaped center of the remaining stars.Flag factsƒ?› Maj. Robert Anderson, commanding officer at Fort Sumter, S.C., lowered the flag and brought it to New York City.ƒ?› It was hung on an equestrian statue of George Washington in Union Square at a patriotic rally of 100,000 people, believed the largest public gathering in the nation.ƒ?› During the war the flag was taken from town to town and auctioned to raise funds. The buyer was expected to donate the flag back to the nation to be auctioned again.ƒ?› On April 14, 1865, Anderson raised the tattered flag over Fort Sumter again to celebrate the Union victory.ƒ?› That same evening, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington.ƒ?› The original flag is housed in the Fort Sumter National Monument Museum, maintained by the National Park Service.Source: Neil D.
