3×5' nylon national flag of Antigua and Barbuda.
Antigua and Barbuda's flag was drawn by a schoolteacher. Reginald Samuel's design was chosen from more than 600 entries in a national competition and first flown on 27 February 1967, when the islands became an associated state of Britain.
Design
A red field with a downward-pointing triangle, forming a V, filled with horizontal bands of black, blue and white. A golden sun with seven points rises from the black band.
History & Symbolism
The rising sun marks the dawn of a new era. Black stands for the African heritage of the people, blue for hope, and red for their energy. Read from the top of the V down, gold, blue and white also evoke sun, sea and sand. The V itself stands for victory. The flag was kept unchanged at full independence on 1 November 1981.
