3×5' nylon national flag of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Côte d'Ivoire's flag is one of the most often misflown in the world, because it is the mirror image of Ireland's. Hang it the right way and you are showing a flag built on the French tricolor model by a nation of the West African coast.

Design

A vertical tricolor of orange at the hoist, white in the center and green at the fly, in three equal bands.

History & Symbolism

The flag was adopted by the Legislative Assembly on 3 December 1959 and kept at independence from France on 7 August 1960. Orange stands for the land and the savanna of the north, white for peace and national unity, and green for hope and the forests of the south. The vertical tricolor follows the French model, as do the flags of Guinea, Mali and others in former French West Africa.

Flag Specifications

  • Adopted: 3 December 1959; flown at independence 7 August 1960
  • Official proportions: 2:3
  • Colors: orange, white, green
  • Arrangement: orange at the hoist

Vexillographer's Note

Ireland's flag runs green, white, orange from the hoist and is officially 1:2, longer than Côte d'Ivoire's 2:3. Orange always goes next to the pole on this flag.
