3×5' nylon national flag of Equatorial Guinea.
Equatorial Guinea is split between a mainland and five islands, and its flag counts them all. Six stars sit above a silk-cotton tree, the "God Tree" under which an early treaty with Spain is said to have been signed.
Design
Three equal horizontal bands of green, white and red, with a blue triangle at the hoist. The coat of arms is centered in the white band: a silver shield with a silk-cotton tree, six yellow six-pointed stars above it, and the motto "Unidad, Paz, Justicia" below.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted at independence from Spain on 12 October 1968. It was altered under the dictatorship of Francisco Macías Nguema and restored after his fall in 1979. Green stands for the country's natural resources, white for peace, red for the blood of those who fought for independence, and blue for the sea that links the mainland and islands.
