3×5' nylon national flag of Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan's blue is said to recall the banner of Timur (Tamerlane), the fourteenth-century conqueror whose capital, Samarkand, is now one of the country's great cities.
Design
Three equal horizontal bands of blue, white and green, separated by narrow red stripes. In the upper hoist of the blue band are a white crescent and twelve white five-pointed stars.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted on 18 November 1991, shortly after independence from the Soviet Union. Blue stands for the sky and water, white for peace, green for nature, and the red stripes for the life force in every living thing. The crescent stands for the rebirth of the nation, and the twelve stars for the months of the year.
