3×5' nylon national flag of Guinea.

In 1958 Guinea was the only French colony in Africa to vote "no" to Charles de Gaulle's proposed community and take immediate independence. Its flag, raised weeks later, matches its three colors to the three words of the national motto.

Design

Three equal vertical bands of red, yellow and green.

History & Symbolism

The flag was adopted on 10 November 1958. Red stands for the blood of those who fought colonialism and for work, yellow for the sun, the country's mineral wealth and justice, and green for its vegetation and solidarity: together, the motto "Travail, Justice, Solidarité." The Pan-African colors also expressed Guinea's short-lived union with Ghana.

Vexillographer's Note

Guinea's flag is the mirror image of Mali's (green, yellow, red). Flown on the wrong side of a pole, either one can be mistaken for the other.
