3×5' nylon national flag of Jordan.

Jordan's flag is the direct heir of the Arab Revolt of 1916, the uprising against Ottoman rule made famous in the West by T. E. Lawrence. Each of its colors stands for a great dynasty of Arab history.

Design

Three equal horizontal bands of black, white and green, with a red triangle at the hoist bearing a white seven-pointed star.

History & Symbolism

The flag was adopted on 16 April 1928. Black stands for the Abbasid caliphate, white for the Umayyad, green for the Fatimid, and red for the Hashemite dynasty that led the Revolt and still reigns in Jordan. The star's seven points recall the seven verses of the Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran, and the unity of the Arab peoples.
