3×5' nylon national flag of Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan's flag is one of the most elegant to emerge from the breakup of the Soviet Union: a golden sun and a soaring steppe eagle on the open blue of the Central Asian sky.
Design
A sky-blue field with a golden sun of 32 rays above a golden steppe eagle in flight, both centered. A vertical band of golden national ornament runs along the hoist.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted on 4 June 1992 and designed by the artist Shaken Niyazbekov. Sky blue stands for the Turkic peoples' reverence for the sky, and for peace and unity. The sun stands for life and abundance, and the eagle for freedom, power and the nation's aspirations. The ornament, called koshkar-muiz ("ram's horn"), is drawn from traditional Kazakh art.
