3×5' nylon national flag of Kenya.
At the center of Kenya's flag stands a traditional Maasai shield with two crossed spears, a declaration that the freedom won in 1963 would be defended.
Design
Three horizontal bands of black, red and green, separated by narrow white stripes. A red, black and white Maasai shield over two crossed white spears is centered on the flag.
History & Symbolism
The flag was raised at independence from Britain on 12 December 1963 and is based on the flag of the Kenya African National Union. Black stands for the people of Kenya, red for the blood shed in the struggle for independence, green for the land and its natural wealth, and white for peace. The shield and spears stand for the defense of freedom.
