3×5' nylon national flag of Malta.
Malta's flag carries a medal. In April 1942, as the island endured one of the heaviest bombing campaigns of the Second World War, King George VI awarded the George Cross to the whole island, and the cross has flown on the flag ever since.
Design
Two equal vertical bands of white and red, with a representation of the George Cross, edged in red, in the upper hoist corner of the white band.
History & Symbolism
Tradition traces the white and red to Count Roger I of Sicily, who is said to have given Malta these colors in 1091. The George Cross was awarded on 15 April 1942 for the islanders' courage under siege. The flag was adopted at independence on 21 September 1964.

Vexillographer's Note
Malta's is the only national flag to display a gallantry award. Do not confuse it with the eight-pointed Maltese Cross of the Knights of St John, which is a separate symbol of the island.
