3×5' nylon national flag of Mauritius.
Mauritians call their flag Les Quatre Bandes, "the Four Bands." It is one of the very few national flags made of four equal horizontal stripes, each a different color.
Design
Four equal horizontal bands of red, blue, yellow and green.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted at independence from Britain on 12 March 1968. Red stands for the struggle for freedom and independence, blue for the Indian Ocean, yellow for the new light of independence shining over the island, and green for its agriculture and its vegetation, green all year round.
Flag Specifications
- Adopted: 12 March 1968
- Official proportions: 2:3
- Colors: red, blue, yellow, green
Vexillographer's Note
Red always flies at the top. Turned upside down, with green on top, it is simply wrong, which makes Mauritius a useful test of anyone hanging a row of world flags.
