3×5' nylon historical state flag of Minnesota, 1957–2024.
For more than six decades this was Minnesota's state flag. It was replaced on 11 May 2024 by the new North Star flag, and it remains a familiar sight and a collector's piece.
Design
A blue field with the state seal at the center, ringed by a wreath of pink and white lady's slipper, the state flower, and nineteen gold stars. The seal shows a settler plowing near the Falls of St. Anthony while a Native American rides past on horseback, beneath the motto L'Étoile du Nord.
History & Symbolism
Minnesota's first flag was adopted in 1893, and this redesigned version in 1957. Three dates appear on the flag: 1819, the founding of Fort Snelling; 1858, statehood; and 1893, the first state flag. The nineteen stars mark Minnesota as the nineteenth state to join after the original thirteen, and the largest star stands for Minnesota itself. The seal's imagery of settlement was a main reason the state chose to replace the flag.
