Niger

3×5' nylon national flag of Niger.

Niger's flag is often mistaken for India's at a glance, but its orange disc is the sun, not a wheel, and its official shape is almost square.

Design

Three equal horizontal bands of orange, white and green, with an orange disc centered in the white band.

History & Symbolism

The flag was adopted on 23 November 1959, before independence from France in 1960. Orange stands for the Sahara Desert in the north, white for purity and hope, and green for the fertile lands of the south and west along the Niger River. The orange disc stands for the sun.
