3×5' nylon national flag of North Macedonia.
North Macedonia's flag is the result of a diplomatic compromise. Its first flag after independence carried the Vergina Sun, a symbol from ancient Macedon that Greece regarded as part of its own heritage; in 1995 it was replaced with this broad-rayed sun.
Design
A red field with a gold sun at the center, from which eight gold rays widen out to the edges and corners of the flag.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted on 5 October 1995 as part of an agreement with Greece. The sun recalls "the new sun of liberty" in the national anthem. The country changed its name from the Republic of Macedonia to North Macedonia in 2019; the flag was unchanged.
Flag Specifications
- Adopted: 5 October 1995
- Official proportions: 1:2
- Colors: red, gold
- Emblem: sun with eight rays
Vexillographer's Note
The rays should reach all four corners and the middle of each edge. On the official 1:2 flag they meet the edges at different angles than on a 3:5 flag, so the design is redrawn for each size.
