3×5' nylon national flag of Oman.

Oman's flag carries the khanjar, the curved dagger that Omani men still wear on ceremonial occasions. Crossed over two swords, it has been the national emblem since the eighteenth century.

Design

A red vertical band at the hoist and a red horizontal band across the center, with white above and green below in the fly. The national emblem, a khanjar over two crossed swords, sits in the upper hoist.

History & Symbolism

Oman long flew plain red. The present flag was adopted on 17 December 1970, after Sultan Qaboos came to power, and its proportions were adjusted in 1995. Red stands for the battles fought against invaders, white for peace and prosperity, and green for the fertility of the land and the Jebel Akhdar, the "Green Mountain."
