Palau

3×5' nylon national flag of Palau.

Palau's flag shows a full moon over the Pacific. In Palauan tradition the full moon is the best time for fishing, planting, harvesting and celebration.

Design

A light blue field with a large golden-yellow disc set slightly toward the hoist.

History & Symbolism

The flag was adopted on 1 January 1981, when Palau became self-governing; it kept the flag at full independence in 1994. Blue stands for the ocean and for the passage from foreign rule to self-government, and the moon for peace, love and tranquility.

Vexillographer's Note

The off-center disc is a classic flag-design device: on a flag in the wind it reads as centered. Bangladesh's flag uses the same trick.
