3×5' nylon national flag of Palestine.

The Palestinian flag descends from the flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916. It was adopted by the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964 and became the flag of the State of Palestine, a UN observer state, when independence was proclaimed in 1988.

Design

Three equal horizontal bands of black, white and green, with a red triangle at the hoist.

History & Symbolism

The colors are the Pan-Arab colors of the Arab Revolt: black for the Abbasid caliphate, white for the Umayyad, green for the Fatimid, and red for the Hashemite dynasty that led the Revolt. The flag was adopted by the Palestinian National Council in 1964 and confirmed for the State of Palestine on 15 November 1988.

Flag Specifications

  • Adopted: 1964; State of Palestine 15 November 1988
  • Official proportions: 1:2

Vexillographer's Note

Add a white seven-pointed star to the red triangle and the flag becomes Jordan's. Both come from the same 1916 original.
