3×5' nylon national flag of Panama.

Panama's flag was a family project. It was designed in 1903 by Manuel Amador Guerrero, son of the country's first president, and sewn in secret by María Ossa de Amador ahead of the declaration of independence from Colombia.

Design

The field is divided into four quarters: white with a blue star in the upper hoist, red in the upper fly, blue in the lower hoist, and white with a red star in the lower fly.

History & Symbolism

The flag was first raised in November 1903. Blue and red stood for the Conservative and Liberal parties, and white for the peace between them. The blue star stands for purity and honesty, and the red star for authority and law.
