3×5' nylon national flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was designed by a student, Edris Lewis, whose entry won a competition held before independence in 1983. Its two white stars stand for hope and liberty.
Design
A broad black diagonal band, edged in yellow, runs from the lower hoist to the upper fly and carries two white five-pointed stars. The upper hoist triangle is green and the lower fly triangle red.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted at independence from Britain on 19 September 1983. Green stands for the fertile land, red for the struggle against slavery and colonialism, yellow for year-round sunshine, and black for the African heritage of the people. The stars stand for hope and liberty, and are also often read as the two islands.
