3×5' nylon national flag of Singapore.
Singapore adopted its flag in 1959, six years before full independence. The five stars beside the crescent stand for the five ideals the new state set for itself: democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.
Design
Two equal horizontal bands of red over white. In the upper hoist, a white crescent opens toward five white five-pointed stars arranged in a circle.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted on 3 December 1959, when Singapore became self-governing, by a committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Toh Chin Chye. Red stands for universal brotherhood and equality, white for purity and virtue, and the crescent for a young nation on the rise.
