3×5' nylon national flag of Slovakia.

Slovakia's coat of arms is one of the oldest symbols in Central Europe: a silver double cross standing on three blue hills, linked to the ninth-century mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who brought Christianity and writing to the Slavs.

Design

Three equal horizontal bands of white, blue and red, with the coat of arms set toward the hoist: a red shield bearing a white double cross on three blue hills.

History & Symbolism

The flag was adopted in September 1992, months before Slovakia became independent on 1 January 1993. White, blue and red are the Pan-Slavic colors. The three hills are traditionally identified as the Tatra, Fatra and Mátra ranges, and the double cross reflects Slovakia's Byzantine Christian heritage.
