3×5' nylon national flag of Slovenia.

Slovenia's flag carries a mountain. Triglav, the country's highest peak, stands in white on the coat of arms, a national symbol so strong that Slovenes say you are not truly Slovene until you have climbed it.

Design

Three equal horizontal bands of white, blue and red, with the coat of arms in the upper hoist: a blue shield edged in red, showing the three peaks of Triglav in white over two wavy blue lines, beneath three gold six-pointed stars.

History & Symbolism

The white, blue and red tricolor dates from the revolution of 1848, from the colors of the Duchy of Carniola. The flag with the arms was adopted on 27 June 1991, as Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia. The wavy lines stand for the sea and the rivers, and the three stars come from the arms of the medieval Counts of Celje.

Flag Specifications

  • Adopted: 27 June 1991
  • Official proportions: 1:2
  • Colors: white, blue, red, gold
  • Emblem: Mount Triglav and the stars of Celje

Vexillographer's Note

Slovenia's arms sit in the upper hoist, overlapping the white and blue bands only. That placement is the quickest way to tell it from Slovakia's.
