Somalia's single white star has five points for the five lands where Somali people live: the former British and Italian Somalilands, Djibouti, the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya.
Design

History & Symbolism
The flag was designed by Mohammed Awale Liban and adopted on 12 October 1954, when Italian Somaliland was a UN trust territory. Its light blue honors the United Nations, which helped guide the territory to independence. It became the flag of the united Somali Republic in 1960.
