3×5' nylon national flag of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Syria's current flag is also its oldest. The green, white and black tricolor with three red stars first flew when Syria gained independence, and it returned as the national flag after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024.
Design
Three equal horizontal bands of green, white and black, with three red five-pointed stars in a row across the white band.
History & Symbolism
The flag was adopted in 1932 under the French Mandate and flew at independence in 1946. It was set aside when Syria joined Egypt in the United Arab Republic in 1958, restored in 1961, and replaced again in 1963. From 2011 the Syrian opposition took it up as the "independence flag." The transitional authorities adopted it after December 2024, and the constitutional declaration of March 2025 confirmed it. Its colors are the Pan-Arab colors of the Arab Revolt, and the three stars are commonly said to stand for the regions united to form the Syrian state.

Vexillographer's Note
Syria's previous flag, red, white and black with two green stars, flew from 1980 to 2024 and is still widely seen in older references. It is a different flag, not a variant, and we offer it separately as a historical flag.
