Syria (1980–2024)

3×5' nylon historical flag of Syria, 1980–2024.

For more than four decades this was the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic. It was replaced after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024 and is now a historical flag.

Design

Three equal horizontal bands of red, white and black, with two green five-pointed stars in the white band.

History & Symbolism

The design was first the flag of the United Arab Republic, the union of Egypt and Syria from 1958 to 1961, and its two stars stood for the two member states. Syria readopted it in 1980. Its colors are the Pan-Arab colors associated with the Arab Liberation Flag of the 1952 Egyptian revolution: red for struggle, white for a bright future, and black for the dark past of oppression.

Vexillographer's Note

This flag is easily confused with those of Egypt, Iraq and Yemen, which share its red, white and black. Today's flag of Syria is green, white and black with three red stars, and is available in our Flags of the World collection.
